Senator Lawan Demands Immediate Funding for Nigerian Military

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

Senator Ahmed Lawan has called for increased funding and the prompt release of resources for Nigeria’s military.

Speaking at a plenary session on March 12, 2026, he argued that security personnel cannot defeat rising insecurity without the proper tools. He warned that expecting success without financial support is completely unrealistic.

The lawmaker famously remarked that soldiers are “not magicians,” emphasizing that bravery alone cannot overcome a lack of weaponry. He stated that sending personnel to face well-armed criminals without modern equipment puts them at an unfair disadvantage. This resource gap remains a primary obstacle to ending the nation’s security crisis.

Lawan urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that approved funds are actually disbursed to the armed forces. He noted that while the National Assembly allocates significant budgets, bureaucratic delays often stall the money. He insisted that these funds must reach the front lines to be effective.

He expressed deep concern that delays in funding directly lead to the unnecessary loss of soldiers’ lives. Lawan argued that protecting those who defend the country should be the government’s highest priority. He categorized the current funding bottleneck as a critical issue that requires an immediate and permanent solution.

The Senator reminded the assembly that military personnel are restricted by discipline from complaining about their lack of resources. Because they cannot speak for themselves, Lawan insisted that lawmakers must act as their advocates. He believes it is his constitutional duty to demand better welfare for the troops.

He cautioned the government against using mere rhetoric or symbolic gestures to address the security situation. Lawan suggested that political support is meaningless without the tangible provision of hardware and ammunition. Success on the battlefield depends entirely on superior logistics and better equipment than the terrorists.

Lawan’s appeal comes amid heightened scrutiny over the effectiveness of Nigeria’s security spending and strategy. By raising the issue, he sought to ensure that budget figures translate into actual “cash-backing” for the military. He wants to see appropriated billions turned into real protection for Nigerian citizens.

In conclusion, the Senator reiterated that restoring peace requires the government to fulfill its basic financial obligations to the military. He maintained that a well-funded and properly equipped force is the only way to achieve stability. Lawan believes that once resources are provided, the military will finally be able to end the insurgency.
