FG Designates Ikom Dam as Strategic National Project to Boost Power, Flood Control

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

The Federal Government has designated the Ikom Multipurpose Dam as a strategic national project.

This decision was finalized in Abuja by the Presidential Project Development Committee to boost renewable energy and control regional flooding.

The initiative aims to optimize water resources while driving significant economic growth.

To manage the project, the government established Steering and Development Committees, with the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission taking a lead role. This framework is designed to create a bankable investment that attracts credible private sector partners.

The goal is to ensure long-term sustainability and transparency through a structured public-private partnership.

A major objective of the dam is to generate 250 megawatts of renewable hydropower to strengthen the national grid. Beyond electricity, the project is critical for managing the River Benue Basin to prevent recurring flood disasters. These efforts are expected to protect local communities and secure valuable agricultural land.

The project is a key part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic agenda, focusing on socially relevant and commercially viable infrastructure. Stakeholders from the Cross River State Government and the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority are collaborating to ensure its success. It is viewed as a strategic asset for regional and national development.

Moving forward, the committee will validate feasibility studies and finalize the most suitable investment models. They are tasked with creating a clear roadmap to transition the project from the concept stage to full execution. Once completed, the dam will stimulate economic activity and improve energy security across the country.
