Mrs. Mufiat Olateju, a 40-year-old mother of five has unexpectedly given birth to quadruplets at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State.Â
Despite earlier scans suggesting a single birth or twins, she was referred to the facility while in active labor and delivered four infants.
The surprise delivery has created an immediate financial crisis for the family, who now have nine children. From her hospital bed, Mrs. Olateju appealed to the Ogun State Government and the public for help, admitting she is overwhelmed by the cost of their upbringing.
Her husband, Mr. Oluwaseun Olateju, confessed to being so shocked by the news that he initially considered fleeing. However, he chose to stay and support his wife, though he maintains that providing for such a large family is currently impossible without significant external donations.
The quadruplets were born prematurely at 32 weeks via cesarean section and require intensive neonatal care. Dr. Taofeek Ogunfunmilayo, the lead consultant, confirmed that while the surgery was successful, the babies need specialized medical attention that has significantly increased the family’s debt.
The family remains at the hospital, facing mounting medical bills they cannot afford to pay. They are urgently calling on Governor Dapo Abiodun and philanthropic organizations to provide social and financial support to ensure the health and future of the four newborns.
