Only Opposition Unity Can Halt Tinubu’s 2027 Re-election Bid, Says Kenneth Okonkwo

Kenneth Okonkwo, former spokesperson for the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential campaign, has urged Nigeria’s opposition forces to form a strong coalition if they hope to prevent President Bola Tinubu from winning a second term in 2027.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Okonkwo warned that without a united front among Nigeria’s top political figures, Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would have an easy path to re-election.

“The only way the opposition can make any meaningful impact in 2027 is by coming together. Whether it will be Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, or others forming an alliance, I am certain a coalition will be necessary,” Okonkwo stated.

He pointed to previous failures within the opposition, notably their inability to seize leadership positions in the National Assembly despite having the numbers, blaming a lack of collaboration and strategic planning. According to him, the lesson for 2027 is clear: fragmented efforts will only strengthen the ruling party’s grip on power.

Okonkwo, who resigned from the Labour Party earlier this year over internal disagreements, has since remained politically unaffiliated. Nevertheless, he continues to advocate for fresh leadership across Nigeria’s political landscape. He has previously called on veteran politicians, including President Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, to step aside and allow new leaders to emerge.

“Nigerians are yearning for fresh faces. We cannot keep recycling the same leaders and expect different results,” he said.

His comments add to growing public discourse around the future of Nigeria’s democracy, with many citizens calling for generational change and more visionary leadership ahead of the 2027 elections.
