By Rachel Akper

Six persons, including a pregnant woman and five final-year nursing students, have lost their lives in a fatal auto crash along the Ilorin Ogbomoso highway.

The accident occurred in the Ote area of Kwara State, along the busy expressway linking Ilorin and Ogbomoso.

Eyewitnesses said the crash happened at the Kwara end of the highway, leaving several passengers critically injured. While some of the victims were confirmed dead at the scene, others reportedly died at a hospital where they were rushed for treatment.

Sources disclosed that five of the deceased were 500-level nursing students enrolled in an Open and Distance Learning Bachelor of Nursing Science programme at a higher institution in Oyo State.

They were said to be travelling to write their second semester examinations at the time of the accident.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident. The Kwara State Commandant of the agency, Mrs. Rosemary Alo, said officers were promptly deployed to the crash site to carry out rescue operations and restore normal traffic flow.

“Our personnel are working to ensure that traffic is eased and normalcy restored on the highway,” she said.

As of press time, the exact cause of the crash had yet to be officially established. Authorities said investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal incident.

The tragedy has sparked grief within the academic community and beyond, as the nursing students were reportedly on the verge of completing their training.
