Kebbi to Reintroduce Housing, Vehicle Loans for Teachers

By Momodu Favour

Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has pledged to reintroduce soft loan schemes for primary and secondary school teachers across the state, covering housing, cars and motorcycles, as part of efforts to improve their welfare.

The governor made the announcement on Tuesday during the inauguration of 12,779 sets of furniture for public primary and post-primary schools in Birnin Kebbi.

The furniture, according to the News Agency of Nigeria, is intended for both teachers and students.

Speaking at the ceremony, Idris said his administration would soon unveil a comprehensive loan package designed to give teachers a stronger sense of belonging and enhance their living standards.

“In-Sha-Allah, by this year, 2026, we will come up with a package that teachers of primary and post-primary schools will benefit from. We shall soon introduce a soft loan package for teachers.

This will cover car loans, motorcycle loans and house loans, among others,” the governor said.

He emphasised that the era of treating classroom teachers as second-class citizens was over, noting that teachers remain central to the development of the state’s education sector.

On the distribution of furniture, Idris described the initiative as part of the government’s broader obligation to provide a conducive teaching and learning environment.

He said beyond the construction and renovation of schools, equipping classrooms and offices remained a top priority.

“I want to assure the good people of Kebbi that this is just the beginning; we will continue to provide this kind of furniture for both teachers and students,” he stated.

The governor directed that the furniture be shared equally between the state Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and the Universal Basic Education Board to ensure balanced distribution across schools.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Halima Bande, commended the governor’s commitment to the sector. She described the intervention as a reflection of a holistic approach to education reform in the state.

While expressing appreciation for the administration’s efforts, Bande noted that the governor’s background as a teacher made his dedication to improving the sector unsurprising.

Observers say the proposed loan scheme, if implemented, could significantly boost morale among teachers and strengthen the state’s drive to enhance education standards.
