A speeding truck has killed a LASTMA official and two commercial motorcyclists in Badagry.
The vehicle reportedly lost control before crushing the victims, who were positioned along the busy transport corridor.
The LASTMA officer was on active duty managing traffic flow when the tragedy occurred. The two riders were also caught in the collision, which has raised fresh concerns over the safety of road users in Lagos.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, confirmed the deaths and condemned the driver’s recklessness.
He stated, “The unfortunate incident is deeply painful and entirely avoidable, as it was precipitated by excessive speed and a total disregard for traffic regulations by the truck driver.”
Initial reports suggest the driver’s high speed made it impossible to avoid the victims during a mechanical failure or lapse in concentration.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as bystanders tried in vain to rescue the three men.
Emergency responders eventually cleared the wreckage and moved the bodies to a morgue. Meanwhile, the police have launched a manhunt for the truck driver, who abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene immediately after the crash.
This accident underscores the ongoing danger posed by articulated vehicles on Lagos expressways.
Authorities continue to urge truck owners to maintain their vehicles and mandate that drivers strictly follow speed limits to prevent further loss of life.
