Mohammed Kasim of the PDP has won the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship. He polled 22,165 votes, successfully defeating his main rival from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The APC candidate, Yahaya Shehu, finished second with 17,788 votes. The results were confirmed by INEC following the council elections held across the Federal Capital Territory.
Kasim’s campaign focused on community welfare and women’s empowerment. He also pledged to improve local healthcare and expand educational opportunities for children in the area.
Affirming the credibility of the exercise, the INEC Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, stated, “Declaring Mr Kasim as the winner, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, said the election was peaceful and smooth.”
This victory provides a significant boost for the PDP amidst its ongoing internal leadership crises. Winning in a multi-ethnic hub like Gwagwalada reinforces the party’s local-level relevance.
The data showed that out of 207,577 registered voters, 46,294 were accredited for the poll. Kasim’s win suggests that grassroots competition remains strong despite national political shifts.
