Shock as Rivers Senator Barry Mpigi Dies

By Rachel Akper

Nigeria’s political landscape was shaken on Thursday following the death of Barry Mpigi, the senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District.

Details surrounding his death remain unclear as of press time, with no official confirmation yet on the exact location, cause, or time of the incident.

However, news of his passing has already sparked widespread reactions across political circles.

Mpigi was widely regarded as a close political associate of former Rivers State governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and played a significant role in Rivers State politics.

Before his election to the Senate, he served in the House of Representatives, where he built a reputation as an experienced legislator. In the Senate, he contributed actively to debates on infrastructure, governance, and development issues affecting Rivers State and the wider Niger Delta region.

The Nigerian Senate is expected to issue an official statement, while tributes from colleagues, political leaders, and constituents continue to pour in. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
