Adebayo Declares FCT Territory for All Nigerians

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

Adewole Adebayo, former SDP presidential candidate, stated that the Federal Capital Territory was not created solely for the wealthy elite.

He spoke at a campaign rally on Tuesday for Khalid Bala-Gano, the SDP chairmanship candidate for Gwagwalada.

Adebayo emphasized that the FCT was originally envisioned as a symbol of national unity and equal opportunity. He noted, “When the administration of Murtala Muhammed created the Federal Capital Territory in 1976, it was not designed for the rich alone or the poor alone. It was meant to be a modern city for everyone to enjoy the benefits of this country.”

The former candidate highlighted the stark disparity between highbrow districts and satellite towns like Gwagwalada. Residents in these outskirts often lack steady electricity, clean water, and quality infrastructure despite serving the city’s powerful officials.

Adebayo argued that true national repair must begin at the grassroots level rather than from the Presidential Villa. He urged voters to use Saturday’s Area Council elections to demand accountable and inclusive governance.

Voters were encouraged to prioritize competence and integrity over ethnicity, religion, or financial inducements. Adebayo described the SDP candidate as a “lawyer for the people” who provides free legal aid and affordable education.

The upcoming polls cover all six Area Councils of the FCT, determining local chairmanship and councillorship seats. These local governments are responsible for essential services like primary health, education, and rural roads.

Khalid Bala-Gano expressed confidence in the SDP’s chances, citing extensive grassroots mobilization and issue-based campaigning.

He promised to address infrastructure deficits and enhance security if elected this Saturday.

Adebayo concluded by reminding residents that local change is the foundation for broader national progress. He urged everyone to take the democratic process seriously to ensure the FCT serves all its citizens.
