Dapson Sparks Debate for Claiming He Delayed Dating Until He Was Financially Stable

A Nigerian videographer, Femi Dapson has stirred widespread conversation online after revealing that he once postponed pursuing a romantic relationship because he felt financially unprepared.
Speaking at an event organized by Meristem Nigeria, Femi Dapson shared that he intentionally waited to build his finances before approaching actress Simi Sanya.
According to him, the decision was influenced by the country’s difficult economic climate, where a significant percentage of the population is projected to be living in poverty.
He suggested that financial readiness was important to him before committing to a serious relationship.
His remarks quickly gained traction online, drawing millions of views and hundreds of responses across social media platforms. While many people supported his perspective—sharing their own experiences of delaying relationships due to unstable income—others pushed back strongly.
Critics argued that tying romance strictly to financial success promotes a materialistic mindset and may reduce self-worth to monetary value. Supporters, however, maintained that being economically secure can reduce strain in relationships, especially in a challenging economy.
The discussion has since evolved into a broader debate about modern dating expectations in Nigeria, highlighting the ongoing tension between financial realities and traditional ideals of love and partnership.
