Lagos, Foundation, Red Cross Mobilise 550 Pints of Blood

The Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service (LSBTS), in collaboration with the Vcare for Development Foundation and the Nigerian Red Cross Society, have mobilised 550 pints of blood in a two-day voluntary donation drive aimed at boosting the state’s blood supply.

The exercise, which took place in Lagos, attracted 550 donors, with organisers disclosing that 35 per cent of them were donating for the first time. The campaign received support from the corporate social responsibility initiative of Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited.

In a statement issued on Sunday via its Facebook page, the foundation described the turnout as a significant milestone in its efforts to promote voluntary blood donation.

It noted that the 2026 campaign marks a steady rise in participation over the years, with previous drives recording 98 donors in 2022, 147 in 2023, 268 in 2024 and 341 in 2025.

With this year’s figure, the foundation’s cumulative total has reached 1,404 donors. The group had earlier received a Blood Donation Champion Award from LSBTS in recognition of its sustained contribution to strengthening the state’s blood bank.

Health officials emphasised that voluntary blood donation remains critical to saving lives, particularly in cases of emergencies, maternal health complications, surgeries and the treatment of patients with chronic conditions requiring transfusions.

They commended donors, volunteers and partner organisations for their commitment, stressing that collaboration between government agencies, non-governmental organisations and private sector partners is essential to meeting Lagos State’s growing healthcare needs.

Residents were also encouraged to make blood donation a regular practice, as maintaining a stable and adequate blood supply depends largely on consistent voluntary participation.
