Suspect Arrested over Trader’s Death at Port Harcourt Market

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the murder of a trader at the Fruit Market, Oil Mill, Rumuokwurusi, Port Harcourt, on Saturday.

Preliminary reports indicate that the victim, Higightor Wenem, 30, from Mbagel Village in Benue State, was involved in a dispute with a wheelbarrow pusher, Zakara Afaaruwu, after requesting that his wheelbarrow be moved to create space for his goods. Witnesses said the request was refused, leading to an argument.

During the altercation, the wheelbarrow pusher allegedly stabbed Wenem with a dagger. The victim was rushed to the Military Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead. His body has been deposited at the morgue for autopsy.

The incident sparked tension between members of the Hausa and Benue communities in the area. Police operatives intervened promptly, restoring calm and preventing further escalation.

The suspect has been arrested and is in police custody as investigations continue. The Rivers State Police assured the public that the situation is under control, with ongoing monitoring, and urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding.
