Trump Calls for Regime Change in Iran as Tensions Escalates
By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa
President Donald Trump has stated that a change of government in Iran would be the “best thing that could happen.”
Speaking at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, he signaled a significant shift toward supporting the ouster of the country’s clerical leadership as a primary objective.
The president’s remarks coincide with a major buildup of American forces in the Middle East. The Pentagon has confirmed that a second aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, is heading to the region to join the USS Abraham Lincoln in a show of “tremendous power.”
Trump criticized the long history of diplomatic efforts with Tehran, noting that negotiations have dragged on for 47 years without results. He lamented the loss of lives and serious injuries suffered by American service members during this period of stalled diplomacy.
Despite the aggressive rhetoric, the administration is still moving forward with nuclear talks in Geneva scheduled for Tuesday. U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are set to negotiate with Iranian officials, with Oman acting as a mediator.
The military deployment is intended as leverage, with Trump warning that the “massive armada” will be ready if a deal is not reached. He emphasized that military action could be avoided only if Iran agrees to the U.S.’s strict new terms for a nuclear agreement.
Asked specifically about his stance on the Iranian leadership, the president remained firm in his assessment of the current situation. He stated, “It seems like that would be the best thing that could happen.”
