Ogun Governor Honors Late Lucia Onabanjo’s Legacy of Service, Family Leadership

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has paid tribute to the late Lucia Onabanjo, describing her as a woman whose life embodied quiet service, steadfast moral values and unwavering family support that bolstered public leadership in the state.

The governor spoke at the Funeral Mass held on Friday at St. Sebastian Catholic Cathedral in Ijebu-Ode, pledging government backing for the completion of a cathedral project in her honour.

Abiodun highlighted that Mama Onabanjo lived a simple and disciplined life, deliberately avoiding public attention while earning deep respect for her humility, faith and ethical standards.

He emphasised that her influence extended beyond political office, being most profoundly felt through the values she instilled in her family and community. “In honour of Mama Lucia Onabanjo, the Iya-Ijo of this church, we will support the completion of this cathedral so it can stand as one of her enduring legacies,” he stated, assuring church authorities of timely delivery of the project.

The governor also remembered her as a devoted wife and mother who promoted discipline, faith and responsibility within her household, remaining a steadfast support to her husband, former governor Olabisi Onabanjo, including during his detention following the 1983 military coup.

In his homily, Reverend Father Mary Odunsi noted that Mama Onabanjo quietly contributed to the success of her husband’s administration, calling her a “silent achiever” whose legacy in the church and society will continue to inspire generations.

The Funeral Mass drew a large gathering of dignitaries, including former governors, lawmakers, traditional leaders and other prominent political figures from Ogun State and beyond. Lucia Onabanjo passed away on Monday, January 11, 2026, at the age of 100.
