By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has elevated 14 High Chiefs and Baales in Oyo town to the status of crown-wearing Obas. The Staffs of Office were presented by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal during a colorful ceremony on Friday.

The Governor stated that the elevation aims to strengthen traditional institutions and promote grassroots development.

He described the move as a recognition of the chiefs’ leadership and their importance to regional peacebuilding.

The newly crowned monarchs include the Alaaguo of Aguoland, the Baba Eyaji of Oyo, and the Iba Samu of Oyo Empire.

They have been urged to lead with integrity and support government programs aimed at improving citizens’ welfare.

Commissioner for Local Government, Ademola Ojo, called the event historic, noting that it reaffirms Oyo’s rich heritage.

He emphasized that the beaded crown is a sacred symbol of authority, service, and divine responsibility.

Despite the celebration, the legal team for the Alaafin of Oyo filed a motion at the Supreme Court to stop the elevation. The challenge centers on the chieftaincy stool of Baale Ago-Oja, which the palace argues was previously declared non-existent by courts.

While the court motion remains pending, the state government proceeded with the installation, maintaining that it acted within the law.

The ceremony was attended by numerous first-class monarchs, top government functionaries, and political leaders.

Regarding the role of the new monarchs, Governor Seyi Makinde stated, “The State Government holds traditional rulers in high esteem because of their roles as custodians of culture, promoters of unity and partners in progress.”
