A section of a one-storey building collapsed on Thursday in the Ibara area of Abeokuta, Ogun State.Â
The incident caused immediate panic among residents and passersby in the busy neighborhood.
Emergency responders, including the Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation (OPIC) and fire services, arrived quickly at the scene.
They cordoned off the area to prevent further casualties as the structure remained unstable.
Fortunately, no lives were lost in the mishap, as those inside the building managed to escape before the partial cave-in. Search operations were conducted to ensure no one was trapped under the debris.
The state government has ordered an immediate integrity test on the remaining parts of the structure. Officials noted that preliminary observations suggest structural weaknesses may have contributed to the sudden failure.
The General Manager of OPIC, Arc. Abiodun Fari-Arole, confirmed the government’s swift response to the emergency. He emphasized that public safety remains the top priority in handling the aftermath of the collapse.
In an official statement at the site, Fari-Arole said, “We have moved in to ensure the safety of the people. The building will be properly assessed, and we will take the necessary steps to prevent any further danger to the public.”
