A police officer has been reported killed and a joint security team attacked by suspected illegal miners in Niger State.
The incident occurred around 1:45 p.m. in Zunzunji, during a confrontation at a mining site allegedly linked to Millennium Metals.
According to reports, a patrol team comprising officers from the Nigeria Police (MOPOL 12 PMF, Minna) and the NSCDC Mining Unit was ambushed after confronting the illegal miners. The miners reportedly mobilized in large numbers, overpowered the security operatives, and set one of the patrol Hilux vehicles on fire.
During the attack, PC Emmanuel Samson was beaten to death, and his service rifle was seized by the assailants. Samson’s death has sparked outrage and renewed calls for urgent action against illegal mining operations in the state.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the attack, and additional security forces have been deployed to the area to restore order and apprehend those responsible.
The incident highlights the escalating dangers faced by law enforcement personnel tasked with tackling illegal mining activities across Nigeria.
The event has also raised questions about corporate accountability, as the site involved has been linked to Millennium Metals, prompting calls for stricter regulation and oversight of mining operations.
