President Bola Tinubu has expanded the Nigeria for Women Programme to target 25 million beneficiaries nationwide.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja, he emphasized that this scale-up is essential for national economic inclusion.
The initiative builds on a successful pilot phase that previously reached one million women.
The administration believes sustainable growth is impossible without placing women at the center of national planning. By moving women into leadership and decision-making roles, the government aims to drive economic stability.
This shift ensures women are viewed as central drivers of Nigeria’s future development.
Highlighting the necessity of this move, the President stated, “A nation that relegates its women is a nation bound for implosion. We have long understood this truth. That is why this administration has not only placed women at the forefront of decision-making but has also entrusted them with leadership in causes that redeem our national promise.”
Tinubu also designated 2026 as the “Year of Social Development and Families” to boost welfare systems. He called for increased World Bank support to meet the programme’s ambitious goals.
This designation follows new international agreements focused on strengthening family cohesion.
The expansion introduces the “Happy Woman App,” a digital platform providing women access to finance and markets.
Minister Imaan Sulaiman noted that this makes Nigeria a global leader in gender-focused policy. The app is a key part of the government’s strategy to use technology for social impact.
State governors have pledged their support, with Katsina State alone committing N4 billion to the initiative. Partners believe empowering women will significantly reduce household insecurity and improve national productivity.
This collective effort aims to ensure the programme’s success across all levels of government.
