The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has urged media organizations to intensify voter education and ethical reporting for the February 21 FCT Area Council elections.

At an Abuja forum, Commissioner Malam Mohammed Haruna emphasized that the media is vital for public perception and electoral credibility.

The commission has completed 10 of 13 scheduled activities, including distributing the final voter register. Upcoming milestones include the Notice of Poll on February 7 and the conclusion of political campaigns on February 1.

Haruna explained that the FCT’s constitutional status and large population make these local polls as significant as state contests.

Highlighting this importance, he stated, “In practical terms, FCT Area Council elections are conducted like governorship elections.”

Technical preparations involve configuring BVAS machines for 2,822 polling units and conducting mock accreditation tests.

While non-sensitive materials are ready, sensitive items remain secured at the Central Bank until shortly before election day.

FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner Aminu Idris called for responsible reportage to build public trust and counter misinformation. He stressed that professional journalism is essential for maintaining a peaceful and stable voting environment.

Administrative updates include candidate replacements and a February 8 deadline for media accreditation.

This election is the first under the new four-year council tenures, with INEC aiming for a transparent and inclusive process.
