NNPC Launches New Gas Master Plan to Transform Nigeria’s Energy Sector
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has launched its Gas Master Plan 2026 (NGMP 2026) to overhaul the nation’s energy sector.
Unveiled in Abuja, the initiative positions natural gas as the primary driver for industrialization and energy security. It marks a shift from policy aspirations to disciplined, results-oriented execution across the entire gas value chain.
Stakeholders at the ceremony described the roadmap as a turning point for Nigeria’s energy transition. By expanding infrastructure and market development, the government intends to convert vast gas reserves into tangible economic value. The NNPC emphasized that this plan is a firm commitment to enhancing global competitiveness while meeting domestic needs.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, stated that the NGMP 2026 is anchored on commercial viability and integrated coordination. The plan aligns with the “Decade of Gas” initiative to make gas the cornerstone of the economy.
He stressed the importance of moving beyond potential to achieve outcomes that benefit all Nigerians.

Reflecting on the nation’s untapped potential, Ekpo stated: “Today’s launch is not merely the unveiling of a document; it represents a deliberate shift towards a more integrated, commercially driven and execution-focused gas sector aligned with Nigeria’s development aspirations.”
He noted that the primary challenge remains translating Africa’s largest reserves into a reliable supply.
The master plan targets improved supply reliability and flexibility for both domestic and export markets. Through strategic partnerships, the NNPC aims to attract investment for a robust infrastructure network.
This includes completing critical pipeline projects to link gas-producing hubs with industrial centers, ensuring energy is available where needed.
NNPC spokesperson Andy Odeh noted that the NGMP 2026 would facilitate a more transparent and efficient operational environment. The strategy includes predictive maintenance and real-time asset monitoring to minimize disruptions. These advancements are expected to boost production volumes and increase revenue from a sector historically overshadowed by oil.
As Nigeria pursues a cleaner energy future, this plan serves as a blueprint for utilizing gas as a transition fuel. By prioritizing gas-led diversification, the government hopes to create jobs, power industries, and stabilize the national grid.
Success is seen as vital for securing Nigeria’s position as a dominant energy player globally.
