Bridge Railing Collapse Injures Trader in Otta
A yet-to-be-identified male roadside trader was injured on Wednesday at about 4 p.m. in the Ojuore area of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State after a railing attached to a bridge under construction collapsed on him.
This raised fresh concerns about safety standards at construction sites.
The incident occurred at the ongoing Ojuore road project, where the trader was reportedly conducting his business close to the construction area when a section of the bridge railing suddenly gave way.
The collapse railings trapped him beneath the debris and caused severe injuries.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the victim was rescued through the combined efforts of sympathisers, site engineers, and officials of the agency.
He said, “A serious accident occurred today at the Ojuore road construction site when a section of the railing of the bridge under construction unexpectedly gave way.
“The incident involved a roadside trader of Hausa descent, who was crushed and trapped under the debris.
“Eyewitnesses said the victim sustained life-threatening injuries, prompting site engineers, alongside officials of TRACE and the police, to act swiftly to rescue him from the scene.”
According to Akinbiyi, the injured trader was later released to his family members, who immediately conveyed him to an undisclosed hospital.
“The victim’s family has since taken custody of him and transported him to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention,” he added.
He also disclosed that efforts were ongoing to clear the collapsed railing from the site, while TRACE officials and police officers remained on ground to control traffic and prevent further danger to road users.
The incident has once again brought the issue of construction safety to the fore, particularly in areas where ongoing projects are close to commercial activities and pedestrian movement.
Similar concerns were raised in July 2025 after the Lagos State Safety Commission sealed a construction site operated by Monterosa Construction Company in the Lekki area, following a crane accident that led to the death of a worker, Rotimi Adesina.
Adesina, said to be the crane operator, was taken to Evercare Hospital in Lekki Phase One, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Stakeholders have continued to call for stricter enforcement of safety regulations to prevent avoidable injuries and loss of lives at construction sites across the country.
