FCT NSCDC Intensifies Preparations for February Council Elections
The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in the Federal Capital Territory, Olusola Odumosu, has urged officers of the command to step up professionalism, discipline and operational readiness as the territory prepares for the 2026 Area Council elections.
Odumosu issued the directive during a strategy meeting at the NSCDC FCT headquarters in Abuja, attended by senior management staff, departmental heads, area commanders and divisional officers.
The session focused on assessing the command’s performance over the past year and setting priorities for 2026.
In a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, Monica Ojobi, the commandant commended personnel for what he described as notable successes in tackling vandalism and other security threats across the FCT.
He particularly praised intelligence officers and those in sensitive assignments, while stressing that efforts must be sustained to eliminate criminal activity within the territory.
Odumosu disclosed that the corps will play a key role in security arrangements for the Area Council elections scheduled for February 21, 2026.
He directed senior officers to ensure proper deployment and coordination of personnel across all formations to guarantee peaceful and credible polls.
He emphasised that safeguarding electoral officials, election materials and voters before, during and after the exercise would be a top priority, adding that officers must remain neutral and non-partisan throughout the electoral process.
The commandant also warned personnel undergoing election security training with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to strictly follow established guidelines, noting that the corps maintains zero tolerance for corruption during election duties.
Odumosu further instructed area commanders and divisional officers to strengthen surveillance in their jurisdictions and deepen collaboration with community leaders to improve intelligence gathering and emergency response.
He cautioned officers against complacency and misconduct, urging them to approach their responsibilities with dedication and renewed commitment. He also appealed to political actors and residents of the FCT to shun violence and cooperate with security agencies to ensure peaceful elections.
The upcoming polls will see voters elect six area council chairmen and 62 councillors across Abuja Municipal, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Kwali and Abaji. Campaign activities are scheduled to end on February 19, 2026, while INEC has confirmed that candidates from 17 political parties will participate in the elections.
