Rhodes-Vivour Slams Makoko Demolitions

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour has condemned the Makoko waterfront demolitions, accusing the Lagos government of displacing the poor without providing resettlement

He argued these actions worsen the housing crisis and social instability.

He criticized urban renewal for favoring elites over indigenous communities who have lived there for generations. Rhodes-Vivour urged the state to adopt inclusive planning that integrates rather than erases these settlements.

Highlighting the use of force and alleged disregard for court orders, he noted that safety concerns shouldn’t excuse stripping citizens of dignity.

He called on civil society to oppose this perceived administrative impunity.

Rhodes-Vivour argued that true development should be measured by human welfare, not luxury real estate. He suggested upgrading informal settlements with essential services instead of resorting to mass evictions.

Focusing on the human cost, he pointed to reports of tragic deaths among vulnerable residents during the clearing.

He maintained that the government’s primary duty is to protect its most financially fragile citizens.

Addressing the state’s priorities, Rhodes-Vivour stated: “Government cannot exist solely for the interest of the rich in a state that is over 75 per cent poor.” He labeled the lack of social housing a systemic failure.
