Godfatherism in Nigerian Politics Must End, Says APC Chieftain

Godfatherism in Nigerian Politics Must End, Says APC Chieftain A senior chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Henry Idahagbon, has called for an end to godfatherism in Nigerian politics, describing it as a practice that undermines democracy and fuels political crises across the country.

Idahagbon said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Sunday,Idahagbon urged political leaders, particularly outgoing governors and influential figures, to refrain from imposing their preferred successors, saying such practices “override the will of the people and weaken democratic institutions. Godfatherism in Nigeria is a unique invention that distorts our democratic process. Unlike in other democracies where influence exists, here it often determines who wins, regardless of the people’s choice,” he said.

The APC leader cited recent political tensions in states such as Edo and Rivers, where outgoing power brokers allegedly dictated succession outcomes, sometimes leading to violence. He stressed that Nigerian politics must prioritize democratic principles, particularly the idea of one man, one vote. Idahagbon’s comments come amid growing calls across the country for political reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections. Opposition parties, civil society organizations, and youth groups have increasingly condemned the influence of political godfathers, arguing that it undermines transparency, fuels political violence, and erodes public trust. Political leaders must allow the people to choose their leaders freely.

The era of imposed successors must end if Nigeria is to strengthen its democratic process,” Idahagbon added. As the country approaches the 2027 elections, analysts believe that the APC chieftain’s statement signals a potential shift in political culture, with more emphasis on accountability, integrity, and democratic participation over personal loyalties to political godfathers.
