Kwankwaso Christens January 23 ‘World Betrayal Day’ over Governor Yusuf’s Defection
Leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and founder of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has announced that January 23 will now be observed as “World Betrayal Day” by members of his political movement.
Kwankwaso made the declaration while addressing supporters at his residence in Kano, against the backdrop of Governor Abba Yusuf’s planned defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking in Hausa, the NNPP leader said the idea was inspired by widespread discussions online about betrayal within the movement, particularly following recent political developments in Kano State.
“I saw multiple talks regarding betrayal and many more on social media,” he said.
“But there was one post by someone who said there’s a need to declare 23rd January as World Betrayal Day.
“Because of that as a leader of this movement, I am now in support of the 23rd of January as a Betrayal Day. We will now be celebrating that day everywhere.”
Governor Yusuf officially resigned from the NNPP on Friday, January 23 from the party platform on which he was elected in the 2023.
The announcement has further deepened political tensions within the state, as loyalists of both leaders continue to take sides following the high-profile departure.
