Gov Abiodun Denies Allegations of Threats, Intimidation over Awujale Selection
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has dismissed reports alleging that he threatened or intimidated members of the Council of Afobajes over the ongoing process to select a new Awujale of Ijebuland.
The governor described the claims as false, misleading and a deliberate attempt to create tension around the traditional institution.
This clarification was contained in a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade.
According to the statement, there was no confrontation between Governor Abiodun and the Council of Afobajes, which is responsible for presenting candidates for the Awujale stool.
It stressed that the governor has maintained utmost respect for the traditional selection process and the autonomy of the kingmakers.
“The reports suggesting threats or intimidation by the governor are completely untrue and should be disregarded,” the statement said, adding that Governor Abiodun has consistently upheld due process and the rule of law in matters relating to traditional institutions.
The government further noted that the governor’s role in the Awujale selection process is strictly guided by existing laws and customs, and that he has no intention of interfering with or influencing the decision of the Afobajes.
Akinmade urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information that could undermine peace and stability in Ijebuland, emphasizing that the Awujale stool remains a revered institution deserving of dignity and respect.
The statement reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to ensuring a transparent, lawful and peaceful succession process, while calling on all stakeholders to act responsibly in the interest of unity and harmony within the community.
