FG Hosts Belgian Ambassador, Advances Talks on Air Connectivity Partnership
The Federal Government and the Kingdom of Belgium have begun discussions to finalise a new Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) aimed at strengthening air connectivity and deepening diplomatic and economic relations between both countries.
This followed a meeting between the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Hon. Festus Keyamo, SAN, CON, and the Belgian Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Pieter Leenknegt, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
The meeting focused on advancing negotiations toward a new BASA framework that will enhance aviation cooperation, improve flight operations between Nigeria and Belgium and create opportunities for increased passenger and cargo traffic.
Both sides held extensive discussions on the proposed agreement and expressed commitment to working collaboratively to conclude the process as soon as possible.
The agreement is expected to open new pathways for air connectivity while supporting broader economic and diplomatic engagements.
Hon. Festus Keyamo noted that improved aviation partnerships remain central to Nigeria’s strategy for boosting international trade, tourism and investment. He emphasised the importance of structured bilateral agreements in strengthening global aviation integration.
Ambassador Pieter Leenknegt expressed Belgium’s readiness to deepen cooperation with Nigeria in the aviation sector, describing the proposed BASA as a significant step toward expanding mutual opportunities between both nations.
When concluded, the agreement is expected to strengthen the broader partnership between Nigeria and Belgium while positioning Nigeria for enhanced global air transport competitiveness.
