Kogi PDP Seeks Deadline Extension on LG Elections

The Kogi State PDP has asked the State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC) to extend the local government election deadlines.
Party Chairman Muhammed Gambo explained that recent leadership litigations prevented the party from meeting original dates.
Gambo argued that since internal disputes are now resolved, KOSIEC should use its discretionary powers to adjust the schedule.
He claimed an extension was necessary to ensure fairness and a truly competitive democratic process.
The party warned of potential legal action if the request is ignored. Gambo noted that the PDP has received no official communication from the commission and will sue to protect its right to participate.
KOSIEC Chairman Mamman Eri rejected the plea, citing strict statutory constraints. He noted that vital deadlines, including candidate submissions and primaries, have already passed and cannot be revisited without violating state law.
Despite the disagreement, the PDP maintains it is ready for the polls and committed to a credible process. However, the commission’s refusal leaves the party’s participation in the upcoming elections in doubt.
