Death Toll in Mozambique, South Africa Floods Rises

Severe flooding in Mozambique and South Africa has claimed over 150 lives.

Mozambique has recorded more than 110 deaths since October, while South Africa’s death toll has reached 37, primarily impacting the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces.

Thousands have been displaced as rising rivers submerged homes and destroyed critical infrastructure.

In Mozambique alone, over 432,000 people are affected, with nearly 50,000 seeking refuge in emergency shelters as vast agricultural lands remain underwater.

Emergency response teams, including South African defense forces, are conducting search-and-rescue operations across the region. The crisis forced Mozambican President Daniel Chapo to cancel his trip to the World Economic Forum to personally oversee relief efforts.

President Cyril Ramaphosa attributed the disaster to climate change, calling for global support for developing nations.

With more rain forecasted, authorities remain on high alert as the humanitarian situation continues to worsen for vulnerable communities.
