Kano Governor Meets Tinubu at Aso Rock over Defection
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has met with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Arriving in his signature red Kwankwasiyya cap, this marked the governor’s first official audience with the President since returning from a trip to Abu Dhabi.
The visit comes amid heavy speculation that Governor Yusuf plans to defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
This potential move has been the subject of intense political discussion and multiple delays since the start of the month.
Negotiations have reportedly stalled because the governor is seeking specific guarantees, including an automatic ticket for the 2027 election. He is also requesting the power to nominate a minister and the authority to replace certain federal appointees with his own loyalists.
These demands have caused friction with APC internal stakeholders and led to a fallout with his mentor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who labeled the move a betrayal.
Many of Yusuf’s cabinet members have even threatened to resign if he officially joins the ruling party.
Despite the controversy, President Tinubu has recently praised Yusuf’s leadership and infrastructural achievements in Kano. Reports suggest the President even paused the APC’s electronic registration in the state to allow the governor to be the first to sign up upon his defection.
