Tinubu Celebrates Ex-Osun Governor Bisi Akande on 87th Birthday
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid tribute to elder statesman and former Osun State Governor, Chief Bisi Akande, as he marks his 87th birthday on January 16, 2026, describing him as a key figure in Nigeria’s democratic development and the progressive political movement.
In a statement issued by the State House, the President said Akande has played a significant role in the growth of democracy in Nigeria and contributed to the formation and institutionalisation of the All Progressives Congress.
Tinubu noted that Akande served as the first interim chairman of the party and helped lay the foundation for its eventual victory in the 2015 general election, which unseated an incumbent government at the federal level.
The President traced Akande’s career from his early professional life as an accountant with British Petroleum to his entry into public service, inspired by the political ideology of Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
He recalled that Akande served as Secretary to the State Government in the old Oyo State in 1979, later became Deputy Governor during the Second Republic, and was Governor of Osun State from 1999 to 2003.
Tinubu commended Akande’s leadership, integrity and commitment to democratic ideals, describing him as a mentor whose advice and encouragement supported his own political journey to the presidency.
He also acknowledged Akande’s continued support for the administration and the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The President added that despite his age, Akande remains active in advocating for democracy, social justice and good governance, and prayed for his continued good health and strength.
