Argentine Football Association Postpones All Monday Matches for Pope Francis

The Argentine Football Association has postponed all fixtures scheduled for Monday to mourn the passing of Pope Francis, a lifelong fan of the sport and devoted supporter of Buenos Aires’ San Lorenzo team.

The decision to delay games by a day is a testament to the Pope’s enduring impact on the country’s football community.

“Argentine football says goodbye to you wrapped in deep sorrow. We will hold a minute’s silence at all matches this week to honor the memory of Pope Francis, a true lover of the beautiful game,” the statement said.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires in 1936, was the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church. He passed away on Monday at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy that extends far beyond the realm of spirituality.

“Francis was not only a spiritual reference, but also a footballing one,” the Argentine Football Association said. “He met with players, leaders, and football legends, such as the captain of the Argentine national team Lionel Messi and Diego Armando Maradona. He never hid his passion for football and his unconditional love for San Lorenzo de Almagro.”

The Pope’s love for football was well-documented, and he often spoke about the sport’s ability to bring people together and transcend borders. In his memoir, he recalled a meeting with Maradona, where he jokingly asked the legendary player about his infamous “Hand of God” goal in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England.

“So, which is the guilty hand?” the Pope asked Maradona, referencing the controversy surrounding the goal. The anecdote highlights the Pope’s lighthearted and humorous side, as well as his deep appreciation for the sport.

The Argentine Football Association’s decision to postpone fixtures is a fitting tribute to the Pope’s memory, and a testament to the significant impact he had on the country’s football community. As the nation mourns the loss of its beloved spiritual leader, football fans and players alike will come together to pay their respects and celebrate the Pope’s enduring legacy.
