INEC Announces Official Dates for 2027 General Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially scheduled the Presidential and National Assembly elections for Saturday, February 20, 2027, marking the commencement of Nigeria’s next general election cycle.
Following the national polls, the *Governorship and State House of Assembly elections are set to take place on Saturday, March 6, 2027.
In line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, the Commission reaffirmed that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) will remain the primary tool for voter verification to prevent identity theft and multi-voting. To enhance transparency, INEC will continue the use of its Result Viewing Portal (IReV) for the electronic upload of polling unit results.
This technological framework will be complemented by the traditional physical transmission of result sheets to collation centers, ensuring a dual-layer verification process designed to safeguard the integrity of the people’s mandate.
While these dates align with Nigeria’s four-year electoral cycle, it is important to note that discussions are currently ongoing within the National Assembly regarding the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2025.
Some lawmakers have proposed shifting the 2027 election timelines as early as November 2026 to ensure all legal petitions are resolved before the inauguration of elected officials.
However, until such amendments are passed into law, the February and March 2027 dates remain the official schedule for the polls.
