FRSC Blames Excessive Speed, Wrongful Overtaking for Crash Involving Anthony Joshua

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says preliminary findings indicate that excessive speed and wrongful overtaking were responsible for the motor crash involving British-Nigerian heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

The accident occurred near the Sagamu axis and involved a Lexus SUV said to be conveying Joshua and other occupants when it collided with a stationary truck by the roadside.

According to officials who responded to the scene, the vehicle was allegedly attempting an overtaking manoeuvre at high speed before it lost control and rammed into the truck.

Five adult males were reportedly inside the vehicle at the time of the incident. Two of them died at the scene, while Joshua and another occupant sustained injuries and were taken for medical attention.

The remaining passengers were said to have escaped with minor or no injuries. The bodies of the deceased were later evacuated to a morgue in Sagamu.

FRSC operatives and security agencies arrived shortly after the crash to manage rescue operations and restore traffic flow along the busy highway.

The Corps described the incident as avoidable, stressing that speeding and unsafe overtaking continue to be major causes of fatal accidents on Nigerian roads.

The agency extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and reiterated its appeal to motorists to exercise patience, observe speed limits, and avoid risky driving behaviour, particularly on major expressways and during peak travel periods.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing, while Joshua is reported to be in stable condition following treatment for minor injuries.
