Tambuwal Condoles Sokoto Community, Urges Calm After U.S.–Nigeria Airstrikes

Former Sokoto State Governor and Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has condoled with residents of affected communities in Sokoto State following recent U.S.–Nigeria joint airstrikes targeting terrorist hideouts in the state, urging citizens to remain calm and avoid panic.

Tambuwal’s message followed reports of loud explosions and military activity in parts of Tangaza and surrounding border communities, where security forces confirmed that airstrikes were carried out against camps linked to Islamic State–affiliated militants, including the Lakurawa group. The operation forms part of ongoing counterterrorism cooperation between Nigeria and the United States aimed at dismantling armed groups operating in the North-West and along Nigeria’s porous borders with Niger. In a statement issued after visiting and engaging with local leaders, Tambuwal described the incident as deeply concerning for residents, particularly given fears sparked by the explosions. He expressed sympathy to families affected by the shock of the operation and commended security agencies for taking steps to protect civilians. I appeal to our people to remain calm, law-abiding and vigilant. This operation is targeted at criminal elements threatening our collective safety, not innocent citizens,” Tambuwal said. He cautioned against the spread of rumours and misinformation, noting that unverified claims could heighten fear and undermine security efforts. The senator urged traditional rulers, community leaders and youths to cooperate fully with security agencies, especially as troops continue to secure the affected areas. Nigerian and Sokoto State authorities have stated that the airstrikes were precision-guided and jointly coordinated, adding that no civilian casualties have been officially confirmed. Security officials also warned that some militants may have fled targeted locations, prompting heightened patrols and alerts across nearby communities. Following the operation, residents were advised to avoid restricted zones and report any suspicious movement or unexploded objects to authorities, as bomb disposal units continue safety sweeps in the area. The airstrikes mark a significant escalation in international support for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism in the North-West, where armed groups have increasingly carried out attacks, kidnappings and cross-border raids. Tambuwal reaffirmed his commitment to engaging federal and state authorities to ensure transparency, civilian protection and long-term security solutions for Sokoto State. Peace, unity and trust between the people and security agencies remain our strongest tools against terrorism,” he added. Security operations in the area are ongoing, with authorities pledging to keep the public informed as developments unfold.
