Aiyedatiwa Hails Akeredolu’s Lasting Impact on Nigeria’s Security Framework
Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has said that the late former governor of the state, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, continues to play a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s security landscape, even two years after his death.
In a tribute issued on Saturday to mark the second anniversary of Akeredolu’s passing, Aiyedatiwa noted that the former governor’s persistent call for state policing and his role in the establishment of the Amotekun Corps have left a lasting imprint on subnational security efforts in the country.
Describing Akeredolu as a courageous and principled leader, the governor said his approach to governance was defined by decisive action, particularly at a time when insecurity had become a major national challenge.
He referred to the late governor as a statesman whose vision went beyond rhetoric and resulted in practical solutions to protect lives and property. Aiyedatiwa stated that although Akeredolu’s death was a profound loss to Ondo State and the nation, his ideals and leadership philosophy continue to guide and inspire present and future leaders.
The governor recalled that Akeredolu was at the forefront of advocating for decentralised policing, a position that eventually led to the collective decision by South-West governors to form the South West Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun. The initiative, he said, was designed to strengthen community-based security and respond more effectively to local threats, particularly in Ondo State and the wider Yoruba region.
He further highlighted Akeredolu’s uncompromising attitude toward security matters, reminding Nigerians of the former governor’s firm declaration that the safety of citizens must never be sacrificed for political considerations.
According to Aiyedatiwa, Akeredolu’s legacy in security reform remains relevant as Nigeria continues to explore more effective approaches to addressing its complex security challenges.
