Ogun LG Chairmen Face Backlash From Labour Party over SUV Distribution
The Labour Party, Ogun State chapter has sharply condemned the decision of the Ogun State Government to provide Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to all 20 local government chairmen saying the move does not reflect the immediate needs of residents.
Governor Dapo Abiodun had on Thursday presented 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross SUVs to the council chairmen in Abeokuta, describing the gesture as part of efforts to strengthen governance at the grassroots.
The presentation, which came during the Christmas season, was welcomed by the beneficiaries, who thanked the governor for the support.
Speaking on behalf of the governor, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat, said the vehicles would enhance efficiency and improve service delivery at the local government level.
He added that the state government remains committed to working with the councils to drive socio-economic development across Ogun State.
However, the Labour Party’s Ogun State chairman, Oluwabukola Soyoye, faulted the decision, saying it came at a time when many communities lack basic infrastructure.
In a statement on Friday, she argued that residents are more concerned about poor road networks, unreliable water supply and deteriorating public facilities than the comfort of political office holders.
Soyoye said several rural and urban roads remain in bad shape, while public schools, health centres and markets are in urgent need of attention.
She maintained that funds used for the purchase of the SUVs could have been better invested in projects that directly affect the daily lives of the people.
According to her, the purchase reflects a governance style that prioritises political leaders over citizens. She urged local government chairmen to show restraint and accountability in the use of public resources.
The LP chairman called on the state government to redirect its focus towards addressing social and economic challenges at the grassroots. She also encouraged residents to hold public officials accountable,
stressing that leadership should be centred on transparency, responsibility and public interest.
Soyoye added that the Labour Party is committed to offering an alternative approach to governance in Ogun State and would correct what it described as administrative failures if voted into power in 2027 under the leadership of Otunba Segun Showunmi.
