COAS Directs Speedy Completion of Barracks Housing, Expands Post-Retirement Accommodation Plans

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has directed the immediate acceleration and completion of all ongoing residential accommodation projects across Nigerian Army barracks nationwide, as part of efforts to close existing housing gaps for personnel.

The directive was issued on Thursday during his address at the closing ceremony of the 2025 Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference held in Abuja.

According to security analyst and conflict researcher, Zagazola Makama, who disclosed the development via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Lt.-Gen. Shaibu reaffirmed that troop welfare, particularly access to decent accommodation, remains a central pillar of his leadership agenda and a continuation of initiatives started by previous Chiefs of Army Staff.

The Army Chief stated that all existing housing projects would be completed and allocated without delay, while additional residential developments would be initiated across army divisions and barracks nationwide.

He added that, as an interim measure, the Nigerian Army would also embark on extensive renovation of existing barracks infrastructure to improve living conditions.

Despite acknowledging progress already made, Shaibu noted that housing shortfalls persist and would require sustained and deliberate action to fully address.

Beyond accommodation for serving personnel, the COAS emphasized that post-service housing for retired soldiers and officers would remain a major priority.

He stressed the need to ensure stability and dignity for personnel after retirement, describing post-service housing as a critical aspect of the Army’s welfare framework.

As part of these efforts, Shaibu announced plans to be in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Friday to commission the Affordable Home Ownership Option (AHOO) housing project for soldiers, alongside the Post-Service Housing Development Limited shopping complex.

He expressed confidence that the various housing schemes, once completed, would significantly reduce accommodation challenges faced by both serving and retired personnel.

The Army Chief also commended the Chief of Logistics (Army) and other senior commanders for their roles in advancing the housing initiatives.

Lt.-Gen. Shaibu reiterated his determination to tackle accommodation challenges decisively, describing the issue as one that demands focused attention and sustained commitment under his leadership.
