Policeman, Scavenger Killed as Speeding Driver Loses Control in Lagos

A police officer and a scavenger were killed on Wednesday in a fatal road accident at Ilubirin inward Simpson, Lagos Island, prompting swift emergency response and an ongoing police investigation.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki.

According to the agency, preliminary investigations showed that the driver of a Toyota Camry with registration number MUS 885 JA was speeding when he lost control of the vehicle, veered off his lane and rammed into a police officer riding a motorcycle and a nearby scavenger.

“The impact resulted in their immediate and irreversible loss of life,” Bakare-Oki said.

LASTMA personnel deployed in the Ilubirin axis were said to have quickly secured the crash site to prevent further harm and ensure the free flow of traffic.

The driver, who reportedly attempted to flee after the crash, was apprehended by LASTMA officers and handed over to personnel of the Adeniji Adele Police Division for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The damaged vehicle was also evacuated from the road to avert secondary accidents and ease congestion in the area.

Bakare-Oki expressed deep sadness over the tragedy and urged motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits and drive responsibly, especially along busy corridors on Lagos Island.
