Dad Accepted My Comedy Career After Seeing Its Success”, Says Sabinus

Nigerian comedian, Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Ejekwu, popularly known as Sabinus or Mr Funny, has revealed how his father finally accepted his comedy career after initially rejecting the idea and describing it as a “stupid business

Speaking in a recent interview, Sabinus explained that his father had always wanted him to become a lawyer. After he struggled to gain admission to study Law, he settled for Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt — where his journey into skit-making quietly began. According to him, he kept his comedy activities away from home because he knew his father would disapprove. The truth came out only after he graduated, when his father saw his face on show posters and confronted him. The discovery sparked anger, with his father lamenting that he had spent money training him for a “serious profession,” not comedy Sabinus said the turning point came when his content began gaining massive attention online, leading to job offers, brand deals and a steady income. As his earnings increased, he began supporting his parents financially — a gesture that softened his father’s stance. He revealed that gifting his father money and showing the progress of his career completely changed the way his family viewed entertainment. The same man who once dismissed comedy now proudly supports his son’s success. From filming skits in Port Harcourt to becoming one of Nigeria’s most recognisable online comedians, Sabinus has grown into a household name with millions of followers, national awards and an expanding brand presence. His story mirrors the struggles many young Nigerian creatives face in convincing their families that entertainment can be a legitimate and lucrative profession. For Sabinus, consistency, passion and results were ultimately what won his father over.
