FG to Unveil Digital Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP) in January

The Federal Government has announced plans to launch the Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP) in January 2026.

This digital solution is designed to simplify the process for Nigerians abroad who lose their passports, providing a quick way to secure an emergency travel document.

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on Friday in Abuja during the launch of the ECOWAS Biometric ID Card.

He highlighted the key benefit of the STEP initiative “This initiative will enable Nigerians abroad who lose their passports to generate an emergency travel document using any mobile device without visiting an embassy.”

The STEP is intended to replace the current Emergency Travel Certificate. The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) had previously clarified that the document will be issued at designated Nigerian embassies and consulates and will be valid for a single entry back to Nigeria.

The STEP is part of wider government reforms aimed at strengthening border governance, enhancing identity management, and aligning operations with international migration standards.

It is expected to complement other digital initiatives, including the recently launched ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card (ENBIC), which facilitates travel within the West African sub-region and strengthens border security against cross-border crimes.

Minister Tunji-Ojo used the occasion to urge Nigerians to trust the government’s capacity to tackle national challenges and called for collective support for ongoing security reforms.
