Sarri Says Lazio Yet to Decide on Dele-Bashiru’s Return Ahead of AFCON
Lazio manager, Maurizio Sarri says the club has not reached a final decision on reinstating Nigerian midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru to the Serie A squad, despite his full recovery from the muscle injury that ruled him out since September.
Dele-Bashiru suffered a strain during the Rome Derby against AS Roma and has been absent for two months.
Although fit to return, he remains sidelined, even as midfielder Nicolò Rovella faces a lengthy spell out injured.
Sarri suggested the 23-year-old’s likely invitation to Nigeria’s squad for next month’s Africa Cup of Nations is a factor in the club’s cautious approach.
“On Dele-Bashiru, I had decided to reinstate him on Friday, but the club then asked me to take some time and wait another week. We’ll discuss it tomorrow,” Sarri told reporters.
When asked whether Nigeria had sought clarity on the player’s availability ahead of the tournament, he said he had been focused on Lazio’s recent fixtures.
“They asked me to wait two or three days and that’s fine. Dele could have been available, but he hasn’t played for two months and could have played a maximum of fifteen minutes.”
According to reports in Italy, Lazio fear adjusting the squad list now could cause complications, particularly with Dele-Bashiru expected to depart for international duty.
A decision on his Serie A involvement is expected after the tournament, alongside potential transfer moves the club is monitoring to create room within the squad.
Lazio defeated Lecce 2–0 at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday as Sarri continues to juggle injuries, form, and looming international absences.
