Monday Sit-at-Home Continues in Anambra Despite Kanu’s Conviction

Residents of Anambra State, particularly in Onitsha and Nnewi, continued to observe the weekly Monday sit-at-home protest, even after the conviction and imprisonment of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Business activities, schools, banks, hospitals, and government offices remained largely closed, while major roads were deserted, reflecting both anger and solidarity with Kanu among the people.

Some residents told that the sit-at-home is a voluntary demonstration by the South East population, not enforced by IPOB.

They noted that claims of IPOB-imposed lockdowns were misleading, adding that criminals had occasionally exploited previous protests for robberies but disappeared when confronted.

Obed Nwachukwu, a resident, said, “Those hoping that markets and businesses will reopen because of Kanu’s imprisonment will have to wait. We are standing in solidarity with him until he is free.”

Chief Okwudili Okoye, another resident, added, “The Federal Government’s claims and the Abuja Federal High Court’s judgment are unsubstantiated.

Monday sit-at-home will continue as a voluntary action in demand for fairness and justice for Ndigbo. Normal activities will resume once Nnamdi Kanu regains his freedom.”

Residents emphasized that the protest goes beyond IPOB, describing it as a broader statement of solidarity with Kanu and a stand against what they perceive as unequal treatment of the Igbo people.

Security agencies have maintained a presence in key towns to ensure public safety, but no major incidents were reported as the voluntary sit-at-home persisted.
