Hamstring Injury Forces Alcatraz Out of Davis Cup Finals

World No. 1, Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from this week’s Davis Cup Final 8 in Bologna after medical examinations confirmed swelling in his right hamstring.

The 22-year-old, who has won six Grand Slam titles, announced his withdrawal on Tuesday, saying doctors advised him to rest rather than compete.

“I am very sorry to announce that I will not be able to play with Spain in the Davis Cup in Bologna. I have swelling in my right hamstring, and the medical advice is not to play,” Alcaraz posted on X.

“I’ve always said that playing for Spain is the greatest thing there is, and I was really looking forward to helping the team fight for the Davis Cup trophy.”

His exit comes just 48 hours after losing the ATP Finals title match to long-time rival and home favourite Jannik Sinner, who has also opted out of the event. Italy, chasing a third consecutive Davis Cup crown, will also be without Lorenzo Musetti, their next highest-ranked player.

Spain now heads into the knockout tournament without its top star, while Austria, France, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Argentina and Germany complete the field competing in Bologna.
