Arsenal Maul Real Madrid 5-1 in Champions League Win

Arsenal produced one of their finest European performances in recent times, humiliating Spanish giants Real Madrid with a 5-1 aggregate victory to book their ticket to the UEFA Champions League semifinals.
The convincing win was a watershed moment for Mikel Arteta’s tenure, showing tactical acumen, squad depth, and a fearless style of play that left the defending champions shell-shocked.
Already winning by a dominating 3-0 in the first leg at the Emirates Stadium, the Gunners were well placed going into the second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Rather than dropping back, however, Arsenal battled the 14-time European champions and departed Madrid with a 2-1 win.
Bukayo Saka opened the gun for Arsenal as a means of compensating for an earlier wasted penalty with a composed finish. Vinícius Júnior gave faint hope to Real Madrid with his goal to put the scoreline even for the night, but substitute, Gabriel Martinelli sealed the win with stoppage-time winner, sending travelling Arsenal supporters to heaven.
Mikel Arteta’s tactical strategy was widely praised as a masterclass in modern European football. Arsenal dominated the midfield battle through the control of Declan Rice and Mikel Merino, while center-back duo of William Saliba and Jakub Kiwior stifled Madrid’s offensive arsenal.
Perhaps most impressively, academy product Myles Lewis-Skelly, 18, had an unflappable, mature display in central midfield, showing the club’s commitment to youth and the depth Arteta has worked into his squad.
Afterward, Arteta was lavish with his praise of his players, praising their discipline and belief:
“To come here and beat at the Bernabéu in the manner that we did—special. It shows how far we’ve come. The players are worth all the credit for their mentality and talent.”
Arteta also confessed to having a chat with his old mentor, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, prior to the clash, seeking advice and motivation. He gave homage to Guardiola’s role in shaping his development as a manager, declaring:
“If I’m here today, it’s in large part thanks to him. His guidance has always been invaluable.”
With the historic win over Real Madrid, Arsenal advance to the Champions League semifinals for the first time since 2009. They will face Paris Saint-Germain in what promises to be a mouthwatering encounter between two of Europe’s most exciting attacking sides.
But the Gunners will be without influential midfielder, Thomas Partey for the first leg, having received a suspension-attracting yellow card in the second leg in Madrid.
Arsenal’s two-match show is being ecstatically reported by fans and pundits alike as a “coming of age” for Arteta’s young side. No longer notorious for their inconsistency in the European arena, the Gunners now seem like genuine challengers for the Champions League title—guided by a tactical genius on the touchline and an attack-oriented, unit-like squad on the pitch.
As the semifinals near, Arsenal’s confidence has never been greater. With sights set on Istanbul, the North London side now dreams of lifting their very first Champions League trophy.
