PDP National Convention Dissolves Party Structures in Five South-East and South-South States

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday announced the dissolution of its party structures in Imo, Abia, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers states, in a major internal reorganisation aimed at strengthening the party ahead of future elections.

The decision was reached at the PDP National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, where Governor Seyi Makinde moved the formal motion for the dissolution. Delegates overwhelmingly endorsed the move, which is intended to pave the way for the validation and harmonisation of executives elected through congresses across the country.

Makinde explained that the restructuring was necessary to ensure unity, discipline, and proper alignment with the party’s national leadership, adding that the exercise was part of ongoing efforts to reposition the PDP for improved performance in upcoming electoral cycles.

The convention, which drew party leaders, stakeholders, and delegates from all zones, also focused on reaffirming internal reforms and addressing lingering disputes within state chapters.

With the dissolution now effected, the PDP is expected to appoint caretaker committees to oversee the affected states until new executives are constituted and ratified.

Party officials say the move reflects a broader strategy to restore cohesion, resolve factional crises, and rebuild public confidence in the PDP as it prepares for crucial political contests in the months ahead.
