Super Eagles Receive Major Boost as Ndidi Cleared to Play Against DR Congo
Super Eagles Captain William Troost-Ekong has expressed delight following the confirmation that influential midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has been cleared by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to feature in the 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoffs final against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) on Sunday in Rabat.
Ndidi, the Besiktas star, was initially expected to miss the crucial match due to suspension after reportedly receiving his second booking in the qualifying series during Nigeria’s 4-1 victory over Gabon on Thursday night.
The confusion was resolved after CAF clarified its disciplinary rules regarding the playoff stage. CAF confirmed that yellow cards accumulated during the World Cup qualifying rounds do not carry over into the playoffs; only confirmed suspensions apply.
This means Ndidi is not at risk of suspension for the final match.
Troost-Ekong confirmed the positive news to the Super Eagles media team, stating the clarification lifted the mood in the camp.
“We are happy that Wilfred can play tomorrow, the clarification is out now, no issues. We also understand what it means for any player on yellow card to miss a game. It’s good to know that he is available for the game.”
The availability of the 29-year-old midfielder is a major boost for the team, as he was a standout performer against Gabon, providing the assist for Victor Osimhen’s goal that cemented the Super Eagles’ victory.
Ndidi’s experience, defensive balance, and leadership will be vital as Nigeria plays for a chance to represent Africa in the intercontinental playoff next year.
