Teenager, Quadri Who Stood in Front of Peter Obi’s Convoy Regains Freedom

Teenager, Quadri Who Stood in Front of Peter Obi’s Convoy Regains FreedomThe Apapa Magistrate Court in Lagos has freed 17-year-old Alabi Quadri, who had been detained since January 2025 at Kirikiri Minimum Security Custodial Centre.

Quadri, who gained national attention in 2023 for standing in front of Peter Obi’s campaign convoy, was facing charges of conspiracy to commit felony and armed robbery.

Quadri’s detention had led to a widespread outrage and concern, with many believing that he was being unfairly targeted and framed by local “area boys” who were resentful of his newfound fame and refusal to share monetary gifts he received after his viral moment.

His lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, had consistently maintained that the detention was a “diabolical frame-up” and had called for his client’s immediate release.

The Apapa Magistrate Court, following legal advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions, ruled that there was no evidence to support the charges against Quadri. The court ordered his immediate release, bringing an end to his months-long detention.

Quadri’s lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, hailed the ruling as a victory for justice, saying, “This is a triumph of justice over injustice. My client was wrongly accused and detained, and we are grateful that the court has seen through the deception and freed him.”

Peter Obi, who had advocated for Quadri’s freedom, also welcomed the ruling, saying, “I am delighted that justice has been served. Alabi Quadri is a young man who was wrongly accused and detained, and I am glad that he is now free to resume his life.”

However, Effiong also called for accountability from the police involved in Quadri’s detention, saying, “While we are grateful for the court’s ruling, we will not let the matter rest here. We will be seeking accountability from the police officers who were involved in my client’s detention and prosecution. Their actions were reckless and unjust, and they must be held responsible.”

The ruling has significant implications for the Nigerian justice system, highlighting the need for greater scrutiny and accountability in the prosecution of criminal cases. It also raises questions about the treatment of minors in the justice system and the need for greater protection and support for young people who are accused of crimes.
