Nigeria Can Power Africa Into New Era Of Prosperity, Says Kashifu Inuwa

The Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, has said Nigeria has the capacity to lead Africa into a new era of prosperity through the combined power of digital innovation, renewable energy, and youth empowerment

Speaking at a conference themed “Prosperity Through Innovation,” Inuwa highlighted the need to reform the economy to deliver sustained, inclusive growth while accelerating diversification through digitalisation and technological advancement. The NITDA boss noted that Nigeria’s growing pool of young, talented professionals and its expanding digital infrastructure give the nation a unique opportunity to drive economic transformation across the continent. He emphasised that technology and innovation cannot thrive without reliable energy and strong infrastructure. Inuwa therefore called for renewed investment in renewable and decentralised energy systems to bridge the gap between urban and rural communities, allowing all Nigerians to participate in the digital economy. According to him, initiatives such as the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) Programme and the Nigeria Startup Act already lay a strong foundation for developing local expertise and supporting innovation-led enterprises. However, he noted that sustained commitment and public-private partnerships are vital to accelerate progress. Inuwa also highlighted the opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), urging African governments to harmonise digital policies, establish cross-border data systems, and invest in technology infrastructure that supports regional integration. Stakeholders at the event agreed that Nigeria’s strategic investments in skills development, digital inclusion, and energy transition could position the country as the engine of Africa’s next economic revolution. Observers, however, cautioned that success will depend on effective implementation, funding, and policy consistency to ensure that Nigeria’s digital ambitions translate into tangible benefits for citizens. With ongoing reforms by NITDA and other federal agencies, Inuwa said the nation is on the right path toward becoming a continental leader in digital innovation, creating jobs, and driving sustainable growth.
